Eliza Carthy’s ‘Cup Song’

The award winning Eliza Carthy MBE, has been working with local communities in Hull as part of PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial composer residencies.

Part of the work she is creating is a reworking of Three Day Millionnaire by Mike Waterson, with a new song to layer on top which is inspired by workshops with various communities around the theme of Hull in the present. Eliza has worked with Hull based folk duo Gary Hammond and Sam Pirt (The Hut People) to write a cup percussion pattern for this work, which will be learned by non-professionals.

This film featuring Gary Hammond demonstrates this cup song rhythm. We are inviting people to get involved by learning this rhythm, or working out their own way to perform the rhythm, which features in a key section of Eliza’s ‘Hull Is’ song.
